[Mike Pearson] Scene from 2004 V Force Reunion [Nigel Corrigan] Scene from 2004 V Force Reunion [Nobby Unwin] Scene from 2004 V Force Reunion [Nobby Unwin] Flying Review Cover [Dave Robinson]
This features Vulcan Mk 1A XH480, again of 101 Sqn, conducting
an 'attack' against Waddington's Air Traffic Control Tower. I had the
Daily Mirror's Air Correspondent aboard to convince him that the
Vulcan's new low level role (post Gary Powers' U2 shoot-down) was
viable. [Eric Macey] This features Vulcan Mk 1A XA910 of 101 Sqn displaying at Goose
Bay in May 1965. I appear to be using only 2 engines but, in fact, 2
Olympus had modified Lucas burners to reduce black smoke emission (a
'give-away' when flying low level over snow covered land). The smoky
other 2 were unmodified.[Eric Macey] This features Vulcan Mk 2 XM649, again of 101 Sqn (when I was
OC) displaying at the Abbotsford International Airshow, Canada in August
1971. The accompanying aircraft was a Tutor of the Canadian National
Formation Team, the Snowbirds. [Eric Macey] Gan - Might be of interest to lots of V Force personnel as I expect many staged through here. [Dave Clark] 617 Sqdn Vulcan XH483, with groundcrew, at Basle International Airport, to celebrate it's opening 1958 [Peter Goude]
4, 50 Sqn Vulcans on the ORP at RAE Bedford in 1977 or 1978 [Len Hewitt] XM603 Streaming at RAF Waddington in 1979 [Len Hewitt] Unkle Bunkle's Bomb. 90 Squadron (former 7 Sqdn) Valiant at Honington, perhaps 1962-63. The significance for me is that Ted Bunkhall was our next door neighbour at Honington and he later became Flight Commander with 90. Sqdn. Sent to me by a 7 Squadron colleague of my father and the info below was given to me by a former ground crew.

The large bomb is apparently an empty carcase of a Blue Danube which was being loaded up to dump in a deep trench in the Atlantic. In the background are trolleys with oxygen and nitrogen bottles. One of the starboard main undercarraige wheels is being changed. The black box adjacent to the nose wheels is a 28volt DC rectifier unit. It is plugged into the 240V mains on the plinth if you follow the cables back.
. [Michael Bullen] Honington 21st November 1957 - article for Sunday Graphic (see VN1), 24th November 1957. Aircraft is XD826. My guesses: P/O Bob Nairn (?), F/L HGB, F/L Brian Wickham, Gavin Lyall (author), F/O Johnny Ireson (?), Co-Pilot (?, F/L A W Ginn). (Kemsley photo N3579). ? = my guesses: Johnny Ireson looks a bit like the picture in the poor press cutting V2, and appears to be a Flying Officer; the 'co-pilot' has the same rig of boots and trousers as Wickham, so I'm guessing this arrangement was particular to pilots; Ginn was the co-pilot that day; and that leaves Bob Nairn who was a Pilot Officer at the time - no bands on his shoulders.
